About Us
The First Baptist Church of South Londonderry is a member of the American Baptist Churches of Vermont and New Hampshire. It was organized in 1811, the first church in town, some 30 years after the town of Londonderry was established and has been a solid presence in the community ever since.
The previous building was situated on the hill in the center of the village, overlooking the West River. The brick meeting house was built in 1834 in the federal style. A rear addition was added in 1880 and the basement in the mid 1950s. A highlight of the building was a beautiful 100 year-old painting on the wall at the back of the baptistery. It showed Jesus with a lamb in his arms, portraying the finding of the lost sheep. The building was completely destroyed by a fire on August 3rd, 2010. Construction on a new building began in 2014, and the congregation started meeting in it for worship in January of 2018. The rebuilding process is ongoing.
A usual Sunday is a casual service where we worship God, sing songs of praise, learn Biblical teaching, and more. Families with children are welcome (and celebrated) and we provide childcare during the second half of the service — we like to have them with us in the first half to worship, give, and pray together. We celebrate the Lord's Supper on the first Sunday of each month. Services usually last an hour, and people stay around to chat afterwards.
We are a church family and we are learning how to follow God. We invite friends to check us out. We laugh and cry and hold one another's hands in all of life's struggles. We find joy in watching the little ones run about. We care about those who are among us. We care about those in our community.
Come and find out for yourself who we are and check out what's currently happening. We'd love to have you!
